Some evenings are worth slowing down for.
This summer at Blacker Hall Farm, we’re opening the Courtyard for a series of relaxed outdoor evenings built around fresh food cooked over fire, seasonal produce and live performances from local musicians.
Summer Nights takes place every other Saturday throughout July and August. Each evening brings together the people, skills and ingredients behind the food at Blacker Hall, with the menu changing according to what is in season and at its best.
It is an evening designed to be enjoyed slowly. There is no need to choose between courses or rush from one dish to the next. Food arrives throughout the evening, prepared by our Chefs and Butchery team and served generously for everyone to share.
Food cooked live over fire
The food is at the centre of every Summer Nights event. Our Chefs and Butchers cook throughout the evening in the Courtyard, using the barbecue and open fire to prepare a menu that changes from one event to the next.
That might mean slow-roasted brisket carved fresh from the barbecue, giant shawarma-style chicken thigh skewers, tomahawk steaks cooked over flame, whole grilled fish, king prawns and seasonal sides made for sharing.
The exact menu is not fixed months in advance. Instead, it is shaped by the produce available and what our team selects for the evening. That approach reflects the way we work across Blacker Hall Farm: choosing carefully, preparing properly and letting good ingredients do their job.
To finish, mini dessert platters are served to the table.
A setting made for summer evenings
The Courtyard provides the setting, with outdoor seating, twinkling lights and plenty of space to settle in with family and friends.
Each evening also features live music from a different local musician. The music is chosen to complement the atmosphere rather than take it over. The focus remains on the food, the people around the table and the evening as it unfolds.
There is also a fully stocked bar available throughout the event.
And, because this is Yorkshire, there is a plan for the weather. If conditions mean the evening cannot continue outside, the event moves into the Barn Kitchen instead.
What it takes to organise Summer Nights
An event like this starts well before guests arrive.
There is the planning of the menu, the sourcing and preparation of the ingredients, the coordination between the Kitchen and Butchery teams, and the practical detail of setting up the Courtyard for an evening service.
The food itself needs careful preparation. Cooking over fire requires knowledge of timing, temperature and the ingredients being used. Large cuts of meat need to be cooked properly and rested before carving. Fish, prawns and seasonal vegetables each need a different approach.
The menu also needs to work as a whole. It needs to offer variety, arrive at the right pace and give people plenty to enjoy without making the evening feel formal or complicated.
Behind the scenes, the team is also preparing the space, organising the service, working with the musicians and making sure there is a considered alternative if the weather changes.
The aim is for the evening to feel straightforward for guests. Arrive, find your table, settle in and enjoy the food.
That simplicity comes from the work done beforehand.
Why the menu changes
A fixed menu can be planned well in advance. Summer Nights takes a different approach.
The food is shaped by the season and by what is available at its best. That means the menu can change across the series, allowing the team to work with different ingredients and make decisions based on quality rather than following a set formula.
For guests, it means each evening has its own character.
For the team, it means using their knowledge and experience to make the right choices at the right time.
It is a simple idea, but one that sits at the heart of how Blacker Hall Farm works: good food starts with good ingredients, and the best way to prepare them depends on what is in front of you.
